Seamless integration for Subversion source code control

For Subversion:
  • Simplify and automate the enumeration of which files are “versioned” within a project. Although this sounds simple, most Subversion users learn that accidentally including “extra” files in a project leads to major headaches. It is unwise to merely take “everything” in a folder.
For Tortoise:
  • Automate the encoding and decoding of source files triggered by events (aka hooks).
For Visual FoxPro:
  • Interact with Subversion directly from inside the Integrated Development Environment (IDE).
  • Fulfill all day-to-day interactions with Subversion via Toolbar and/or the VFP Main Menu.
  • Develop with VFP native language to allow developers to “add hooks” for their custom environment whenever needed.

Is SubFox compatibility with SVNCOM version 1.7.2 certified / verified ?
I'm using version 1.6 and don't want surprises...

eselje Nov 19, 2012 at 1:26 AM
Ignore my previous comment about not updating to TortoiseSVN 1.7.x. Now that SVNCom has released a 1.7 version you can do the upgrade. Just keep them in sync.

eselje Jan 18, 2012 at 7:31 PM
Do NOT upgrade your TortoiseSVN to 1.7.x. It will break SVNCom and you won't be able commit anything through SubFox. This isn't a SubFox shortcoming, but it will affect SubFox until SVNCom releases a version that can support version 7 Subversion Repositories.

SubFox replaces underscores in directory / file names with spaces. Why ???
We use underscores in our filenames a lot, so SubFox is useless for us
(we get error messages "... file does not exists"; eg. file "systembone_ms25.dbc" is SubFox searching as "systembone ms25.dbc")
Any suggestions ? (rename all the files is not a good solution)

The update check is annoying and unnecessary for me as i fallow the VFPX's RSS.
The source is incomplete (".h" files missing, dbcxmgr.vcx missing)
Why ?!

edyshor Oct 15, 2010 at 5:23 PM
Everytime i return from debuger to VFP IDE, subfox check for updates. Don't know why this happens as Subfox should check for updates only the fist time it gest loaded into Vfp IDE not every time i return from debugger. Also on this subject, how can i disable the update checking of Subfox ?! I check vfpx regular so when there is an update i'll know.
Any news on the issues i posted ?!

edyshor Oct 9, 2010 at 5:20 PM
i've created two issues about subfox, don't know if the project admin will see them automatically or should it be in a certain format or if i should have created 'discussions' .
can somebody elaborate on that ?!

Just wanted to make a note about branching and subsequent merging.. since it's not natively part of Subfox it's not entirely intuitive. This is what i'm doing now: branch through Tortoise, switch WC over to branch (tortoise), use Subfox as usual.. when ready to merge, upload everything, switch to trunk (tortoise), merge the revisions from branch (tortoise), and finally "translate source files ("decode after download" option)" through subfox to give me happy VFP files. I'm still a bit of a nooblet at SVN, so if there is anything i'm doing wrong (esp. if there is something that should give me a heartattack if i knew about it), please let me know.

hoffi42 Jun 15, 2010 at 8:46 PM
@kainhart How odd. Yes I did have to do an update. I guess Subfox just displays the Update operation in a strange way. When I do the update through Tortoise it just says 'Thanks. You have arrived at revision xxx. Have a nice day'. Maybe that's kind of what I was expecting instead of seeing the just committed change being downloaded again. Thanks for the help. Makes sense now.

kainhart Jun 14, 2010 at 7:31 PM
@hoffi42, you have to do an Update after your Commit to properly move to a specific revision or the HEAD in Subversion. On a file-by-file basis the revision could be updated but not for the whole working copy since you would potentially be missing other committed changes by other developers. Whether the deltas for the committed files are actually included in the Update operation or not is probably more of an issue to take up with the Subversion developers themselves and I believe this may be different depending on whether you are using SVNSERVE or the appache module.

wondering about this one: everytime i upload something, i have to download on the next go. I understand that it doesnt know when i'm using another program to upload changes, but shouldnt SubFox know what it just uploaded? Does it not record the new revision after the upload. Minor nuisance, but would be great if in the next version i wouldnt have to download everything i just uploaded.

Downloaded latest version of SubFox and selected VFP / File / SubFox / Help. Error message subfox64.png not found (I am using VFP9SP2 on Windows XP 32bit) but help file did open.

hoffi42 May 26, 2010 at 11:11 PM
Actually been able to fix the project file.. just tossed it and had it created again. So never mind on that one.

hoffi42 May 26, 2010 at 10:13 PM
love what i see so far.. definitely superior to anything else I've given a shot. one thing you should give another look though (and let me know if there is another place i should make these comments) is the *rec sections in the subfox files. They seem out of order sometimes. As long as you know what you are doing, you'll be ok, but trying to do a compare can be challenging when these are out of order (or maybe tortoiseMerge is just not very good at finding the actual differences.
Another thing I found is that my excluded project files are supposed to be purged from the .pjx.subfox file .. i dont quite get that, and i have no idea how to fix it. I have already included them into versioning with Setup Versioned Files, but they are not being added back to the subfox file. Obviously, i'm not going to commit the change, but would be great to see those items back in the file at some point..
any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for a great product.

This project is an excellent idea but until now I could not install.
I follow the instructions on users guide but did not work.
I use Windows 7 x64 and I'm having the following problem: OLE error code 0x80040154: Class not registered.
If someone can help me I thanks.

kainhart Feb 24, 2010 at 7:58 PM
DavidHolden, could you elaborate one the ObjectFactory that you mentioned. I suspect we are seeing a particular error due to the way our .dbf files are being encoded and it's not clear to me whether SubFox is using the default scctext.prg or the alternative pl_scctext file we have been using as our default.

kainhart Feb 24, 2010 at 12:57 PM
We are currently evaluating using SubFox as a replacement for Source Safe in order to better integrate with our .NET Developers who are also using Subversion. It would nice to see more IDE integration similar to that of VisualSVN (Client) or AnkhSVN which integrate into Visual Studio. An example would be to see modifications on any given file by accessing something in the right click context menu from the project explorer.

edyshor Feb 16, 2010 at 12:21 AM
@Akselsoft: not the best place to ask, but could you recommend some good PM replacements (something that you use for example). Is something out there that truly replaces the PM, for example when opening a pjx from File / Open or by "modify project" ?!

DavidHolden Jan 11, 2010 at 7:46 PM
To Akselsoft -- Not plannning an SCC version since SCC is just another way of saying "MS Source Safe", which SUCKS btw.

SubFox now includes an ObjectFactory so that you can install your own legacy translator (e.g. SccText, TwoFox, scX, etc).

On the question of extensibility -- SubFox is designed as a collection of classes plus GUI tools. Most of the functionality is accessible directly through the classes, but not every important feature. However, all of the GUI interaces are ALSO accessible directly through the command line, which should make the program easy to automate. Try downloading the source code and inspecting the MAIN program, then send me an email with your design questions. I am eager to develop the mechanisms that will make SubFox easy to integrate with custom tools.

DavidHolden Jan 11, 2010 at 7:23 PM
To Andrea Mariottini -- The portability problem has been resolved in release 1.2.106 -- file name reference to SVNCOM has been replaced with a GUID reference. Thanks for the bug report.

amariottini Nov 30, 2009 at 3:47 PM
Very good job! This is more natural for Subversion users than Microsoft SCC.
I'm testing and just noted a little bug: subfox search for c:\program files\Pushok Software..... but on my system I have c:\programmi\.... (I'm italian).
Moreover I already have svncom.dll in C:\Programmi\Pushok Software\SVNSCC\svn because I have SVNSCC plugin.
So it would be very useful if the path to svncom.dll, could be changed by the user!

Akselsoft Nov 25, 2009 at 12:56 PM
David,
Are you planning on doing an SCC implementation? or maybe using Christof's tool for converting ?CX files into XML?

I learned the hard way about including "everything" in the directory so that would be great.

Will this also be an "extensible" tool so those who have replacement PMs can integrate it ?

edyshor Nov 20, 2009 at 11:32 AM
@DavidHolden ..
Looks good from the pictures, can't wait to takle with it :)

DavidHolden Nov 19, 2009 at 7:39 PM
@Skysurfer...
I checked out Paul McNett's scX tool -- not too deep, maybe an hour or so -- it appears to be nothing more that a translator. Nothing wrong with that, but SubFox also includes a comprehensive translator, yet at 1529 lines of code it is only 4% of the source code. SubFox is MUCH more than that. These distinctions will emerge when the documentation starts coming out. Thanks for your interest in SubFox.

edyshor Sep 30, 2009 at 10:44 AM
Was this project abandoned ?! :(

amariottini Sep 24, 2009 at 7:53 AM
I'm using SccTextX + PushOK SVNSCC + TortoiseSVN software to integrate VFP and SVN.
There are some bad things in standard VFP-source control integration, and I wrote some of them in the comments at SccTextX.
Do SubFox solve the problems I mentioned?

Skysurfer Jul 9, 2009 at 9:26 PM
I'm pushing all my teammates to begin using VFP with SVN, that project would be great! I guess this project should be given more interest from all the VFP community.

bdempsey47 Jul 9, 2009 at 4:48 PM
I'm greatly interested in this as our company is in the process of moving to SVN and I maintain a large-ish VFP application. If you need crash test pilots contact me!

RCampbell12 Mar 12, 2009 at 8:40 PM
How would this be different than something like Paul McNett's scX tool? http://paulmcnett.com/scX.php

edyshor Feb 12, 2009 at 12:31 PM
This is a must, i'll look forward to it. will it be able to generate working forms and classlibs from code in prgs? orwll it use the scx2xml and xml2scx tha i've seen around the web?
Anyway, hi will be one of my vorites for shure! Good luck guys :)
